Mother of University of Florida Student Killed in a Hit-and-run Accident Asks For Safety

GAINESVILLE, FL - A news story reports about a University of Florida student who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident and how the mother of the victim addressed the Gainesville City Commission last Friday night.*

She asked the Gainesville city leaders to improve pedestrian safety on West University Avenue.  Gainesville Police Department reported on December 9th, 2020, at around 10:49 PM, a fellow UF student was hit by a hit-and-run driver while she was trying to cross the street. 

There are two UF student hit-and-run accident cases that have not been solved and are currently under investigation.

Gainesville Police Department stated that their officers had not identified the driver responsible for the latest fatal pedestrian accidents.  The officers believe that the driver was in a BMW sedan.  The Gainesville Police Department is asking for those with information about these accidents to contact the Gainesville Police Department.

The Gainesville City Commissioners approved a motion to petition the Florida Department of Transportation to reduce West University Avenue's speed limit and add sidewalk barriers.
