University of Florida Works on New Traffic Enforcement Strategy Following a Recent Fatal Pedestrian Accident
The University of Florida has decided to work with the Gainesville Police Department and other government agencies to develop and implement a new traffic enforcement program following a tragic, fatal pedestrian accident. The Gator Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) was devised following a tragic accident that killed a University of Florida student and injured four others. The accident happened on one road that passes by the University of Florida campus.
The University of Florida campus often requires staff and students to cross major roadways to get to classes. Although Gainesville is known as a pedestrian-friendly city, there have been numerous pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities every year.
The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) announced the Gator STEP program that brings law enforcement, city officials, University of Florida leaders, and other government agencies together to solve pedestrian safety issues. The Gainesville Police Department will focus on safety violations involving scooter safety violations, crosswalks, and speeding along West University Avenue. University Avenue is a highly trafficked area most commonly used by students coming and going to classes, patronizing bars, and restaurants. University Avenue is also a major street for traffic and tourism. The Gainesville Police Department issued almost 10,000 traffic citations and more than 3,000 traffic warnings in 2020.
The Gator STEP program will begin in the next few weeks. The announcement was made in advance to raise awareness of the new safety program.
