Palm Bay Police Department and FDOT Renew Their Successful Pedestrian-bicyclist Safety Program
According to HOMETOWNNEWSBREVARD.COM, the Florida Department of Transportation and the Palm Bay Police Department have partnered together to address the issue of pedestrian accidents in Palm Bay, Florida.
The program reviewed the most pedestrian accident-prone roads in the city. The program is known as Florida's Alert Today/Alive Tomorrow High Visibility Enforcement Program. The community safety initiative is intended to increase awareness and compliance with existing pedestrian traffic laws and regulations. The program specifically addresses the laws that protect bicyclists and pedestrians on Florida roadways.
High Visibility Enforcement is a pedestrian safety approach that is meant to educate the community on safe driving, biking, and walking behaviors as well as improve compliance with Florida's traffic laws. This data-driven enforcement program aims to decrease the number of traffic accidents that cause serious and fatal personal injuries to cyclists and pedestrians.
The two most vulnerable groups of road users are pedestrians and bicyclists. Traffic accidents involving bicyclists and pedestrians are more prone to severe injuries or fatalities than any other traffic accident type.
Florida's Alert Today/Alive Tomorrow High Visibility Enforcement Program has resulted in a decrease in accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists. The program boasts a decrease in pedestrian accidents by over twenty percent.
The two most dangerous roadways identified by FDOT are the corridors of Malabar Road and Palm Bay Road. These two areas have the greatest number of pedestrian accidents in Palm Bay. The Palm Bay Police Department will step up their enforcement of traffic laws in these two areas from November 30th until May of 2021.
The Palm Bay Police Department is asking drivers and pedestrians to do their part by driving carefully and by staying alert.
