Three Pedestrian Accidents in 36 Hours Cause Concern With Tallahassee Residents
TALLAHASSEE, FL- Wctv.tv reports that three pedestrian crashes occurred this week in Tallahassee, prompting locals to express concern over whether the city's roads are too dangerous.
The incidents all took place in a span of 36 hours. The first event involved a victim in a wheelchair who was trying to cross the street at Tennessee and North Meridian. That individual survived his injuries, but the second crash proved fatal. The second incident occurred the same day as the first when a pedestrian was crossing Crawford Highway in the evening.
Reports state that the area of second incident is not well-lit and that lighting likely played a role in the tragic incident. The final collision also involved a victim in a wheelchair who was attempting to cross Woodville Highway. The driver in that crash reportedly did not see the victim on the road as it was dark and raining. Reports did not include information regarding the status of the victim in that crash.
Locals in the Tallahassee area are frustrated with the string of pedestrian collisions. Some believe that drivers in the area create risks for pedestrians by traveling too fast or using their phones while driving. Some people suggested that drivers are more inclined to break traffic laws in the wake of the coronavirus because of the less heavily trafficked roads.
Police used the string of accidents to remind motorists to put their phones down and stay focused on the task at hand. Pedestrians sometimes cross the road in unexpected places outside of crosswalks. It is up to drivers to be careful and vigilant when operating their vehicles.
When it comes to deadly pedestrian crashes, Florida is one of the worst places for pedestrian accidents in the United States. In fact, Florida, Georgia, Arizona, California, and Texas together account for nearly half of all fatal pedestrian crashes in the United States.
