Should You Add Emergency Contacts to Your Driver's License?

August 26, 2020

FLORIDA - Drivers should consider adding emergency contacts to their driver's licenses in Florida and in any other state where this may be an available option. While Florida law does not mandate that drivers must add emergency contacts, there are compelling reasons to do so.*

Florida police officers report that between the state's weather and crazy traffic conditions, no one can ever predict when an emergency will occur. Sadly, in too many cases, police investigate crashes where drivers suffer severe injuries that cause them to be unable to speak to officers and tell responders who to contact. Police can check a person's license to find out vital information about the victims. If emergency contacts are listed, then officers can get in touch with those important people. Having loved ones present at the hospital or in a time of need can be a comfort in some of the scariest moments of a person's life.

It is possible to update emergency contacts online, and then officers can scan a license to find out that information.

No one ever heads out thinking that he or she might be involved in a devastating collision, but in Florida, there are significant risks of being in a crash. In 2019, 3,220 people lost their lives in car accidents in the Sunshine State, and many more suffered severe injuries. Florida is one of the only states in which crashes are actually on the rise rather than declining. The state is also leading the country in pedestrian deaths.

It is wise to exercise caution on the road, and plan ahead.
