Florida is Considered One of the Most Dangerous States for Bicyclists
USA- NHTSA.gov writes that in 2018, 857 people in the United States tragically died in accidents while riding bicycles. When a collision involves a cyclist and a motor vehicle, the results are usually fatalities and severe injuries for the cyclists. Keeping people safe on bikes requires that both cyclists and drivers follow traffic laws when they are out on the road. When it comes to places where cycling crashes are most common, Florida takes the number one spot. In 2017, 125 people died in bike accidents in the Sunshine State.
Bike safety advice often starts with the need to use a helmet. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) writes that cyclists not only need to use a helmet, but they need to ensure that the helmet fits them properly.
Riding at night is a major risk, and regardless of the time of year, most fatal bike crashes take place between six and nine in the evening. Most of these crashes take place in urban locations, and alcohol is a common factor contributing to 37 percent of fatal bike collisions.
Cyclists should always travel with the flow of traffic and should be sure to follow traffic signs and signals. Disobeying traffic regulations puts cyclists at risk because their movements are less predictable.
Of course, even when cyclists are careful, drivers can put them in danger by not following the law and not yielding to bikes. Many motorists fail to notice cyclists, pass too closely, and to drive too fast. All of these situations put people on bikes in harm's way. It is important that drivers remember that it is their responsibility to share the road with cyclists.
