Florida is Home to Deadliest Streets for Pedestrians
FLORIDA- Out of the nation’s ten deadliest metro areas for pedestrians, eight are located in Florida. The numbers are based on what is called a Pedestrian Danger Index or PDI. Researchers evaluate the number of people living in an area, the number of people who commute on foot, and the number of pedestrians tragically killed in order to determine this number and to rank metropolitan centers based on how deadly they are for people who travel in them on foot.
Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford came in first place out of all areas in the nation. In fact, Florida holds the top six spots on the list. Bakersfield, California, comes in seventh place, and Jacksonville, Mississippi, falls in tenth with the rest of the spots belonging to the Sunshine State.
Not surprisingly, Florida is the worst overall state for pedestrian deaths. The number of deaths in the sunshine state per 100,000 residents is 2.73, leading to a PDI of 182. The second worst state on the list, Alabama, has a rate of 1.74 fatalities per 100,000 people, and a PDI of 145. However, looking at Florida’s deadliest metropolitan area shows an even more striking PDI of 313.2. Only the top twenty states are listed, and in twentieth place, falls Kentucky with a PDI of 57.5.
The report highlights the need for change and for the government to prioritize safety. A big factor when it comes to dangerous streets is the design of the roads. Intelligently designed streets may greatly reduce the risks posed to pedestrians, as well as everyone else on the road.
