Cyclist Face Risks on Florida's Deadly Roads
FLORIDA- Bikes are a popular form of transportation for Florida's residents, according to PATCH.COM. The weather encourages biking and it allows people to avoid the state's characteristically congested and hectic traffic.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Florida is one of the worst states for deadly crashes involving bikes. Cape Coral is the worst of the cities in the Sunshine State in terms of per capita cycling deaths.
Bike safety advocates have been busy working to make Florida safer for riding. Two important safety tips that may seem obvious to avoid a crash include never riding after drinking, and wearing a helmet. Alcohol and lack of helmet use were both factors in many deadly bike crashes.
While Florida came in as the number one place for deadly bike crashes, some other states also performed poorly. Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, and South Carolina were also on the list.
It's important for cyclists to learn the bike laws in their state. Map out safe routes before leaving and stay off risky roads. If possible, cyclists should also avoid biking after dark.
