Florida Roadways Top List of Nation's Deadliest Interstates

CORAL GABLES, FL- Patch.com writes that several Florida highways were ranked among the deadliest roads in the United States. In fact, Interstate 4, which runs through Orlando, Tampa, and Daytona Beach, was found to be the deadliest road of all with a rate of 1.25 fatalities per mile.*

Interstate 95 ranked fifth on the list with a rate of .73 fatalities per mile. The worst stretch of that interstate is the part that runs near Jacksonville.  I-75 runs from Miami Lakes to Michigan, and the worst part of the interstate was around Atlanta, Georgia. State Road 192 came in third overall with a rate of .867 deaths per mile. The study analyzed data from a five-year period. 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the country overall has experienced a decline in traffic deaths. In 2019, studies suggested that fatal crashes dropped by 1.2 percent. While nine out of ten regions experienced fewer traffic fatalities, the southeast was the only part of the country to see fatality numbers rise. The Florida region recorded a two percent increase in traffic-related deaths. 

Despite the increase in the southeast, vehicle occupant deaths, motorcyclist fatalities, pedestrian and cyclist deaths were all down in the nation as a whole. Only trucker fatalities increased nationally in 2019 if early estimates prove accurate.
