Study Finds Florida Deadliest State to Walk In
FL- Studies have indicated that Florida is the worst state in the nation for pedestrian safety, according to NBCMIAMI.COM. The report, which was published by the National Complete Streets Coalition and Smart Growth America found Florida had the highest "Pedestrian Danger Index" (PDI) of any state in the country.*
The area found to be the least safe in the state was Orlando, followed by Daytona. Nine parts of Florida ranked in the top twenty of the deadliest places in the nation for foot traffic. In fact, cities in the Sunshine State took all six of the top spots on the list.
Sadly, these deaths have been increasing, and between 2008 and 2017, pedestrian fatalities rose by 35.4 percent across the country.
The tragic increase in pedestrian fatalities cannot be simply explained just by the fact that people are walking or driving more now than in 2008. Instead, much of the problem is that our roads are continuing to be designed in ways that are not safe for pedestrians.
Other studies show that our choice of vehicles is making our roads more dangerous. SUVs are creating a greater risk of a deadly crash as compared to crashes involving smaller cars and sedans.
