Florida Tops the List in Pedestrian Accident Deaths in the Nation
MIAMI, FL- Miami.cbslocal.com writes that Florida is at the top of the list in number of pedestrian deaths, and Orlando-Kissimmee is one of the worst parts of the state for pedestrians. The study was carried out by the National Complete Streets Coalition, which states that in the last ten years, 50,000 people have died in pedestrian crashes in the United States.*
The number of these crashes has increased each year, in part because of bigger cars, such as SUVs, which are dominating the road throughout the nation. SUVs are more likely to kill a pedestrian than are sedans, and yet, they are only part of the problem.
Distracted driving is another big factor that puts every road user at risk. But safety advocates say that much of the issue comes down to the roads themselves, which are designed in such a way that they are not safe for pedestrians. Wide roads with high-speed limits and long blocks are a problem for pedestrians.
Many modern roads allow fast-moving traffic and have fewer places for pedestrians to cross safely. As a result, many people end up crossing in places where it is not safe to do so. This is especially problematic in Florida, which has many flat, big roads where vehicles travel at high speeds. The faulty and unsafe road design has made Florida's cities hazardous to anyone wishing to navigate on foot. In fact, the state is home to eight out of the ten deadliest cities for pedestrian crashes.
The National Complete Streets Coalition writes that cities should take steps such as lowering the speed limit and improving street lighting in an effort to lower and eliminate the number of people killed in these preventable tragedies.
