Florida Reported More than 101,000 Hit-and-Run Crashes in 2018

FLORIDA- Winknews.com writes that hit-and-run crashes are common on the roads throughout the Sunshine State. Florida officials have been reminding drivers that it is their responsibility to stay at the scene if they are involved in a crash, even if the incident is not their fault. 

Of the more than 101,000 hit-and-run crashes that took place in 2018 in Florida, 198 resulted in fatalities. 

One driver who struck and tragically killed a thirteen-year-old boy was later apprehended. That motorist is now facing 20 years in prison. The incident highlights the severe consequences that will follow a driver who flees the scene of a crash.

The number of hit-and-run fatalities has increased in recent years. In fact, between 2009 and 2016, the AAA reports that these deaths have increased by 60 percent. The majority of those killed in hit-and-run crashes are pedestrians and cyclists. 

Florida is near the top of the list of states when it comes to the number of per capita hit-and-runs. The only states with worse rates of fatal hit-and-runs than Florida are New Mexico and Louisiana.
