NHTSA Opens an Investigation Involving a Fatal Tesla Accident at a Florida Rest Stop

July 15, 2022

According to a statement issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the agency has opened an investigation concerning a Fatal Tesla accident.*

The media release states that a California couple was tragically killed in a Florida interstate rest stop accident close to Gainesville, Florida. The couple was riding in their 2015 Tesla when the vehicle rear-ended a parked tractor-trailer on July 6, 2022. The Florida Highway Patrol stated that the Tesla was moving through a rest stop parking lot when the Tesla, for some unknown reason, hit the rear of the tractor-trailer truck. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating the I-75 Tesla accident. They were no confirmed reports of the Tesla being on "Autopilot." The Tesla veered into the parked Walmart truck, and the car's front passed under the truck's trailer. The vehicle's roof was crushed in the impact, and the victims were tragically killed.

The news report states that Tesla did not immediately contact the news agency to provide comments concerning the accident.

NHTSA has opened dozens of special investigations concerning Tesla accidents in which the car's driver assistance systems were believed turned on. The NHTSA reported there had been over 350 accidents involving driver-assist systems in the past year. Tesla vehicles make up about 273 of those cases.
