Tesla Car Crash Trial Calls NHTSA and CEO Musk as Witnesses
FLORIDA - A news article published on teslarati.com reports that a wrongful death case is calling both National Highway Traffic Safety Advisor Missy Cummings and Tesla CEO Elon Musk as witnesses.*
The fatal car accident trial focuses on Tesla's Autopilot driver assistance feature. According to the lawsuit, the victim's family blames the driver assistance feature for causing a fatal car accident.
The lawsuit alleges that back in March 2019, the victim was involved in a deadly crash when his Tesla Model 3 crashed with a semi-truck along a Florida highway. According to the National Transportation Safety Board's investigation, the victim activated the car's Autopilot ten seconds before the accident.
Tesla issued a statement to ABC News back in 2019 that stated the victim's Tesla Autopilot feature was turned on by the driver about 10 seconds before the accident. The statement also reported that the driver then removed his hands from the steering wheel. According to Tesla, the car's Autopilot had not been used at any other time during the trip.
Missy Cummings, a "vocal skeptic" of Tesla's Autopilot, will also be called to testify in the case. Ms. Cummings was named to the position of Advisor to the NHTSA recently, much to the dismay of Tesla fans accusing her of having a bias against Tesla's semi-autonomous software.
