Pedestrian safety throughout Atlanta and all of Georgia becomes a bigger and bigger issue as cities continue to grow and more cars are on the road everyday. Pedestrian accidents account for eleven percent of all motor vehicle fatalities. Accidents involving pedestrians who are completely unprotected often result in injuries that are far more deadly than vehicle-on-vehicle accidents. This is due to pedestrians lacking any of the numerous safety protections of a car, truck or SUV. Last week we published an article in this blog about the serious danger posed to toddlers and other small children from back up accidents including vehicles pulling out of driveways. How serious is this danger? The Atlanta Constitution-Journal reported that a Cobb County toddler was hit and killed when he wandered behind his father's Toyota Tundra as his father backed out of the driveway on Saturday. No matter whether you are walking around the block on a quiet suburban street or making the trek to the store along a busy highway, pedestrians who lack any physical protection are always at risk from motor vehicle accidents. This risk is increasing with the growing number of hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius. Hybrid vehicles idle quietly with engines that are virtually inaudible at less than twenty miles per hour. Montlick & Associates - Highway Pedestrian Accident Victims Face Challenging Legal Issues in GeorgiaA pedestrian who is involved in a collision with a motor vehicle on a highway faces challenging legal issues. Just as a driver has a legal obligation to exercise reasonable care for the safety of pedestrians, pedestrians themselves have an obligation to take reasonable care for their own safety. Pedestrian accidents, particularly those that occur on a highway, involve questions about the liability of a pedestrian for one's own injuries. A pedestrian was run down and killed by a woman driving eastbound on South Marietta Parkway late Monday night. This latest pedestrian accident is a tragic wake up call to those who walk the roadways in the greater Atlanta area and elsewhere throughout Georgia. Atlanta has been rated amongst the ten most dangerous cities in the U.S. for pedestrians. Three pedestrians per day are struck by motor vehicles in just the Atlanta metro area counties. A pedestrian was hit by a motor vehicle on I-85 in Atlanta, just north of Cleveland Avenue on Wednesday. The highway patrol indicated the man was still breathing following the collision but no further information is known at this time. Pedestrian accidents like this one are all too common with a pedestrian being hit and injured by a motor vehicle every 8 minutes in the U.S. Because the human body is no match for thousands of pounds of metal moving at high rates of speed, these accidents frequently result in catastrophic injuries and death for pedestrians. |
