Practice Areas - Bextra Claims next
Drug manufacturer Pfizer markets the drug Bextra. Two studies have linked Bextra, a drug in the same class as Vioxx, to an increase in heart attack and strokes.  In November 2004 FDA scientist David Graham testified to Congress that Bextra was one of five drugs that needed to be closely watched for safety.

On Thursday April 7, 2005 the FDA directed Pfizer to pull this painkiller off the U.S. market.

What is Bextra

Bextra is used to treat osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and menstrual pain.

This drug is in the same class of Cox-2 inhibitors as Vioxx.  These drugs are related to non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen but perform differently than the standard NSAIDs.

The Problem with Bextra

Studies have linked Bextra to similar problems as the drug Vioxx:  increased cardiovascular risks such as heart attack or stroke.  In addition, Bextra has been linked to serious skin disorders.

Bextra Side Effects

In November 2004 a study was released at the American Heart Association conference that showed that the risk of heart attacks and strokes among people with arthritis or heart disease doubled with the use of Bextra. In October 2004 Pfizer confirmed that two small clinical trials showed heart bypass patients who took Bextra had a higher risk of heart attack and stroke.

In November 2002, the FDA warned about potentially fatal skin conditions related to the use of Bextra. These serious and life-threatening skin reactions include cases of Stevens-Johnson syndrome or SJS.  SJS is a rare and potentially fatal disorder which results in inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, genitals, intestinal tract and the membrane lining the eye. Lesions and blisters can result.  Another condition noted was Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) similar to SJS but less serious.  It causes peeling of the skin like that of a severe burn victim.   Bextra’s label was changed at the time to warn of these side effects.  People who developed a rash were advised to stop taking the drug immediately and to contact their doctor.
