Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a treatment that involves taking the female hormone estrogen or a combination of estrogen and progesterone to relieve the symptoms of menopause including osteoporosis, hot flashes, mood swings and vaginal dryness. HRT works by replacing hormones that are lost when women go through menopause. It was also believed that HRT reduced the risk of heart disease in post-menopausal women. However, studies have shown that the risks of HRT drugs like Premphase, Premarin and Prempro outweigh their benefits. A study called the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) initiated in 1993 found that hormone replacement therapy side effects included a 41 percent increased risk of stroke, double the risk for blood clots and a 26 percent increased risk for breast cancer. The study also found that women taking estrogen had a six to eight fold increase in uterine cancer and an increased risk of ovarian cancer.
A number of studies have examined the relative benefits and side effects of HRT drugs like Premphase, Premarin and Prempro. The Journal of the American Medical Association and the American Heart Association have issued warnings that women avoid Prempro because of increased risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and blood clots that can result in stroke. Serious side effects associated with HRT include the following:
- Breast cancer
- Blood clots
- Gallbladder disease
- Heart attack
- Ovarian cancer
- Stroke
- Uterine cancer
- Endometrial cancer
HRT drugs have generated huge profits for the drug company's that market these drugs with Prempro and Premphase generating more than $2 billion and Premarin another $1.3 billion in revenue in a typical year. Unfortunately, HRT was used widely because of the widespread belief, apparently unsupported by actual clinical studies, that it helped reduce the risk of heart disease in post-menopausal women. Evidence now suggests that not only does HRT not reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease but substantially increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
The dangers associated with hormone replacement therapy drugs are so significant that a 2002 study of 16,000 women taking a estrogen and progesterone combination was terminated three years early because of the serious side effects that became apparent during the study including heart attacks, blood clots and breast cancer.
