This heavy metal used in some MRIs and in MRAs has been shown to be the cause of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermotherapy (NFD) a serious and painful disease starting in the skin of the arms and legs which then spreads to other areas of the body including internal organs and can eventually lead to death. The skin changes color, often to pink or orange and then brown, and stiffens developing a hard texture. This can make the limbs hard to move. The skin can also lose its hair and pigment. A kidney transplant might be necessary to treat this condition. Symptoms can start in a few days or even months after the patient was injected with the contrast dye during the MRI.
Although these contrast agents are supposed to be secreted out of the body rapidly, some people, especially those with impaired kidney function, may not be able to secrete the metal as quickly as necessary.
As of May 2007, the FDA requires a Black Box Warning on all MRI contrast dyes containing gadolinium, warning caution in using them in people with impaired kidney function.
The brand names of MRI contrast dyes containing gadolinium include Omniscan, OptiMARK, Magnevist, MultiHance, and ProHance.
