Pfizer markets this drug used to treat smoking addiction. While most side effects are mild (like nausea and sleep disturbance), more serious side effects have been reported. In the fourth quarter of 2007 Chantix was found to be the cause of 988 serious injuries in the U.S. reported to the FDA, more than any other individual drug in this time period.
More serious side effects include depression, including suicidal thoughts and tendencies, aggressive behavior, hepatitis, liver failure and severe allergic reactions and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS).
On February 1, 2008 the FDA issued an Alert regarding Chantix, The alert noted that it appears increasingly likely that there is an association between Chantix and serious neuropsychiatric symptoms. The FDA went on to state that product label warnings need to note that Chantix should not be used while driving, piloting airplanes or operating machinery because it may cause unconsciousness, seizures and hallucinations.
In May 2008, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) banned pilots and air traffic controllers from using Chantix after a study by a medical-safety group found that it had apparently contributed to auto accidents and other mishaps that posed risks to users and others. The new warning came in a report by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, based on an analysis of adverse-events reports submitted to the FDA.
